Hunzinger is serving as General Contractor for the SC Johnson Elementary School Addition and Renovation project located at 2420 Kentucky Street in Racine. Racine Unified School District faculty, staff, students, elected officials, community members, and project partners including project designers Partners In Design Architects were all in attendance.
SC Johnson Elementary’s expansion and renovations are part of RUSD’s Long-Range Facilities Masters Plan made possible by a $600M referendum. The project includes expanding, renovating, and modernizing the SC Johnson Elementary School, originally constructed in 1955, with building additions in 1961 and 1991, to meet current curriculum standards while creating educational spaces that enhance learning and engages students. The 11,000-square-foot expansion is a multipurpose gymnasium and stage/performance space. The expansion provides the opportunity to renovate the area currently occupied by the gym and auditorium into a community room, a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) classroom, a new art room, and offices. The renovation also included revitalizing the interior finishes throughout the school and the “right-sizing” of classrooms.
Other aspects of the project include HVAC upgrades and adding air conditioning, a Fire Alarm System Replacement, creating a Makers Space in library, completing masonry repairs, installing new LED lighting and clock system with phone emergency power system. We will be closing existing glass block windows along the roof line and completing significant high priority roofing repairs.
Thank you to the Racine Unified School District and the SC Johnson Elementary School staff and student chorus for hosting us at the event. The new additions and renovations started in May 2024 and be completed in the August of 2025.
