The Kern Center at Milwaukee School of Engineering is located at 1245 North Broadway, Milwaukee, WI. Hunzinger was hired as Construction Manager for the new 210,000 SF state-or-the-art health and wellness facility. The facility features a NHL-sized ice hockey arena and 50 stall underground parking garage on the two lower levels. Uihlein Wilson Architects of Milwaukee served as the project architect.
This facility has a two-level elliptical shaped fitness center, a competition arena with a basketball/volleyball court, a wrestling room, laundry facility and athletic training center. All of which are on the main level. It also includes a center for health and counseling services.
The field house includes three cross-court basketball/volleyball courts or two cross-court tennis courts, batting/golf cages, triple/long jump pit, and a pole vault plant box. The third floor of the building houses MSOE’s Athletics Department offices and a 160-meter running track mezzanine suspended from the roof structure above. The site constraints meant an extensive earth retention system had to be used around the perimeter of 75 percent of the building to allow for the construction of foundation walls.
“We want to let Hunzinger Construction Company know that the staff, leaders, and members of Grace Lutheran Church were very pleased to work with Hunzinger’s Milwaukee School of Engineering Kern Center project superintendent. He was exceptionally cooperative and helpful to us as the “neighbors” throughout the building of MSOE’s Kern Center. He bent over backwards to be accommodating, and he should be commended for his kind actions. You can be very proud of such an employee representing your company.”
