Taher,Inc is located at 4290 North Teutonia Avenue in Milwaukee, WI.  Hunzinger Construction Company served as the general contractor for the company’s new production kitchen and food distribution center.  This new facility is an expansion for Taher which allows them to enlarge its operation from about 18 workers to 85 over the next two years.

Bruce Taher, owner of the Minnesota-based company, decided to relocate his small kitchen in Brown Deer to Milwaukee.  He purchased the former Ferko Meat Co., a 10,800-square-foot facility that had sat empty for about two years.  Hunzinger’s Commercial Interiors division transformed the former meat packaging facility into a state-of-the-art commercial production kitchen in only 9 weeks.  The project included design/build mechanical systems consisting of two new roof top units, one makeup air unit, new electrical service and all new plumbing components, FRP wall paneling and vinyl faced ceiling tiles were installed throughout for ease of cleaning.  Custom kitchen equipment and a walk-in cooler and freezer were also part of the facility designed to produce fresh food for charter schools, senior nutrition programs, grocery stores and gas stations.

“The big challenge on this project was time. Taher had to be in their new facility in 9 weeks which didn’t leave a lot of time for a complete gut rehab where we had to demo the building down to the studs and the subfloor. This historic building had sat vacant for more years than anyone could remember and it was water damaged and needed a new roof. The facility itself not only had to meet the usual City of Milwaukee Building inspection standards, but the City Health Inspector also had to approve our work before the tenant could begin operations. The facility was designed for future expansion so the plans specified that the higher UDSA standards be met which our crews handled without any issues. We worked two shifts to get the work done in the short time frame but the results were amazing. It’s great to be part of a project where you know the company is doing good things, in this case, providing meals to schools and the elderly.”
