Milwaukee School of Engineering BioMolecular Laboratories is located on the MSOE Campus at 1025 North Broadway Street, Milwaukee, WI. Hunzinger was hired as the General Contractor for this interior demolition and alteration and new construction project designed by Uihlein Wilson Architects also located in downtown Milwaukee.

The new BioMolecular research labs include 4 new state-of-the-art laboratory work environments, stock and material prep room, 7 private offices, the renovation of existing restrooms, and new mechanical and electrical rooms. The greatest challenge of this project required the installation of a dedicated air handling unit loading through the exterior wall of the building, which at one point served as a bottling building for a former brewery. The new lab exhaust fan serves several fume hoods, clean benches, and bio-safety cabinets throughout the lab space, with duct constructed from Polyvinyl chloride coated steel. Lab casework and experiment areas included lab air and vacuum with natural gas and reverse osmosis water supply.

“This new laboratory had very unique HVAC conditions that required 24 hour exhausting equipment and highly specialized ventilating. It was a renovation of an historic building and to retrofit this highly sophisticated lab equipment into an historic building called for really detailed supervision and installation. Our crews did a great job and the lab turned out great. MSOE has been really happy with it, it has performed exactly as specified.”
