Hunzinger is proud to announce that three of our projects won a Top Projects of 2019 Award from The Daily Reporter. The Daily Reporter’s 21st annual Top Projects event will recognize outstanding achievements by Wisconsin builders, owners, engineers, architects and more. The Top Projects Award Celebration has been postponed to October 1 from its original date in May because of COVID-19 pandemic. At the event in October, they also will unveil the “Best in Show” from 2019 which is chosen by a panel of industry executives.
The Hunzinger projects recognized are the Milwaukee Bucks Entertainment District, Sendik’s Food Market at The Corners of Brookfield, and Uline W5 Distribution Center.
Milwaukee Bucks Entertainment District
Hunzinger Construction Company managed the construction of the new Deer District Entertainment Block across from Fiserv Forum, home of the Milwaukee Bucks. The Entertainment Block spans Fourth Street from W. Highland Ave. to W. Juneau Ave., and is a central element of the master design plan for Fiserv Forum and surrounding development. The Entertainment Block features active space designed for year-round community use featuring a mixture of dining, entertainment and retail. The block serves as an important connection between Fiserv Forum and existing commercial activity along Old World Third Street. The overall Entertainment Block project included a public plaza roughly 93,500 SF, Building A 30,000 SF not including the decks, Building B 32,000 SF not including the decks and Building D a 2,000 SF pub that services the large open air trellis that houses benches, area heaters and large video screens to ensure year round activity. The area also includes public restroom facilities.
Hunzinger surpassed all the inclusion goals for the project with 34.65% of the projects being awarded to SBE firms. The goal was 25%. On the Resident Preference Program goals, Hunzinger’s team far exceed the goals of 40% with 43.15% RPP met on the plaza and 52.2% met on the buildings.
Hunzinger also served as general contractor for the new Good City Brewing which is the first tenant. The 11,000 SF taproom includes food, Good City brews and products from other Wisconsin craft breweries (Good City is located in Building A).
Punch Bowl Social, a Denver based restaurant and bar, opened in 2019 (Building B). They operate two levels of the entertainment block at 320 W Highland Ave, occupying 24,000 SF which includes a 1,249 sq. ft. upper-level deck.
The final building that Hunzinger Construction Company built on the site (Building D) opened in the Fall of 2018 and serves the “beer garden walkway” and directly links to North Old World 3rd Street and to Fiserv Forum. The 2,000 SF pub extends between the other two buildings in the Entertainment Block, which includes the plaza outside the front entrance to Fiserv Forum. The beer garden has informal seating, gathering areas, and a large screen TV. About 75% of the beer garden is under the canopy.
The MECCA Sports Bar and Grill opened in January 2019, and Punch Bowl Social and Drink Wisconsinbly opened in the spring. The beer garden/tap room opened in the fall 2019. The Entertainment Block was developed by Head of the Herd Real Estate Development LLC. The Entertainment Block was designed by Rinka Chung Architecture.
By all measures, the Deer District Bucks Entertainment Block has been a huge success.
Sendik’s Food Market at The Corners of Brookfield
Hunzinger served as General Contractor for the 40,000 SF two-story Sendik’s Food Market renovation at The Corners of Brookfield. The reimagined shopping experience includes new services, expanded selections and greater convenience, plus a sophisticated bistro and grill area, complete with an extensive list of wine, local craft beer on tap, gourmet espresso drinks, nitro cold brew on tap, fresh-squeezed, cold-pressed juices and homemade smoothies. The bistro has seating for 25. The project includes new escalators that bring customers up to the new addition of a 7,000-square-foot Sendik’s Home store on the main shopping center level. The store features carefully-curated clothing selections, an in-store dressing room, an expansive floral shop, international gourmet food selections and an array of brand-name kitchen products like LeCrueset, Staub, All Clad, Zwillings-Henckels and more.
A new walkway provides direct pedestrian access between Union Street and Bluemound Road. Hunzinger completed this massive renovation in 10 months with the full service grocery store remaining open and fully operational throughout the project. Hunzinger crews self-performed selective demolition, rough and finish carpentry and all concrete work on the project. Madisen Maher Architects were the project designers.
Uline W5 Distribution Center
Hunzinger served as the Construction Manager for the new Uline W5 Distribution Center and warehouse facility located at 12657 Uline Way in Kenosha, WI just across the I-94 freeway from the Amazon Fulfillment Center. This is the second in a series of warehouse distribution centers that Uline is building on the site.
Hunzinger also served as CM on the initial building, I6, which included major site development and new construction of an 880,000 SF project includes an 800,000 SF multi-function warehouse distribution center and an 80,000 SF logistics and office support space. Located on previously undeveloped land, the huge 144 acre site required major site development, storm water management, utility services and infrastructure upgrades to support the facility.
The W5 Distribution Center and warehouse facility an 800,000 SF distribution center and warehouse facility that features a precast and steel superstructure with 40-foot high panels to allow maximum flexibility for long-term storage and distribution needs. The building features over 700 skylights and 202 loading dock doors to streamline shipping and receiving.
Hunzinger’s Virtual Design and Construction Coordination (VDCC) processes were instituted in building systems coordination for architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection elements. Additionally, VDCC was utilized for lean task-specific scheduling and cost management for the project.
HGA Architects and Engineers were the project designers with Pinnacle Engineering Group, Brookfield, WI working as the Civil Engineers.
The project was completed on time in the fall of 2019. Uline and Hunzinger are set to break ground in the spring of 2020 on two more warehouse distribution facilities on the same site.
