Hunzinger has a long and successful relationship with CUNA Mutual Group, working with them consistently since 2000 on multiple commercial projects including a six year, 23 phase interior renovation project that was undertaken in three occupied buildings and totaled 1,000,000 square feet. Our past success is a testament to our incredible team of project managers, skilled tradespeople and subcontractors and this project is no exception, our subcontractors on the main entry and lobby project include exceptional mechanical contractors USA Fireproofing, Alpine Plumbing, General Heating and Air Conditioning and Staff Electric.
Hunzinger is serving as the self-performing construction manager and our crews are completing the demolition, rough and finish carpentry, and all the concrete work for this project. This is a very exciting endeavor for CUNA Mutual Group because it is the first major exterior renovation to their corporate home since it was built over 40 years ago. This new look for their headquarters is so important, they held a design competition and invited 5 premier design firms to present their vision for this more user friendly and accessible gateway into CUNA Mutual. HGA out of Minneapolis was awarded the architectural work that includes a new modern and alluring 2,200 square foot glass and steel addition that seamlessly ties into the 9,100 square foot completely renovated and rebuilt lobby that refreshes their corporate identity as it transitions to the more traditional existing offices. The project also consists of exterior landscaping and hardscape with over 30,000 square feet of site work consisting of renovating multiple tiered planters, a new concrete and asphalt circle drive and adjacent parking, and convenient ADA accessible ramps and doors. Hunzinger’s construction team features Klein Dickert Glass Milwaukee, Inc. serving as the glazing contractor for the featured entry.
Hunzinger’s work on this project began in August and will wrap in mid-December as we complete this fast tracked project in just 5 months. To accomplish this feat, Hunzinger has a crew of 14 of our top concrete crew leaders and most experienced carpenters working diligently to ensure the highest quality craftsmanship while maintaining a safe jobsite. This project is being done within an occupied facility and all the subcontractors are closely following CUNA Mutual Group’s operating restrictions of providing 72 hour notice of working on the mechanical and electrical systems during off hours and a 5 day notice for mechanical and electrical work within occupied space. Hunzinger and CUNA Mutual Group work together on all safety issues and we recently held a “safety luncheon” for all our workers to celebrate their safe work and to aggressively dialog safety standards and goals.
Given the off hours work necessary to keep the project moving forward, many members of our Hunzinger crew have been staying in Madison to maximize their availability and remain flexible throughout the short construction schedule. This has produced a bond between crew members that has resulted in a very special spirit of comradery that has bolstered the team effort to complete this magnificent, visually stunning new entry.
