Hunzinger is the ONLY Local Contractor on BOTH Lists
Engineering News-Record (widely known as ENR) is a weekly magazine that provides news, analysis, data and opinion for the construction industry worldwide. It is owned by The McGraw-Hill Companies. The magazine’s subscribers include contractors, project owners, engineers, architects, public works officials and industry suppliers. It covers the design and construction of high-rise buildings, stadiums, airports, long-span bridges, dams, tunnels, power plants, industrial plants, water and wastewater projects, and toxic waste cleanup projects. It also covers the construction industry’s financial, legal, regulatory, safety, environmental, management, corporate and labor issues.
For fifty years, ENR has compiled and published rankings of the largest construction and engineering firms annually, measured by gross revenues. Its flagship ranking, the one that spun off other lists, was first published in the August 6, 1964 edition and it was the ranking of the largest 400 U.S. general contractors.
Since this year is the 50th anniversary of the “ranking” launch, ENR ran a retrospective on the initial list and noted that the introduction of the Top 400 was not without controversy. They recalled that there were criticisms and corrections called for in the early years but the ENR Top 400 list quickly caught on. The rankings became a matter of pride and a matter of competition for contractors throughout the nation.
The firms on the list have changed over the years, of course. Many contracting giants from the first Top 400 list are long gone or have been acquired, merged or otherwise assimilated in other organizations. It is incredible that Hunzinger is one of only 51 firms to be listed as the Top 400 both in 1964 and 2014. That means only 20% of the largest contracting companies in the country from 1964 are still doing business today as the top firms in the nation. Amazingly, Hunzinger is the only local contractor that appears on both lists.
