Mitchell Park Greenhouse Facilities for The Domes of Milwaukee County is located at 524 S Layton Blvd, Milwaukee, WI. Hunzinger served as Construction Manager for this 60,000 square foot new construction addition of 7 new industry standard climate greenhouses, a storage prep facility and a connector link building that brings together the new facility with the iconic public domes of Mitchell Park adjoining between the Arid and Tropical Domes. The greenhouses were designed by Nexus, a manufacturer of highly specialized greenhouse facilities.
The seven greenhouses have a radiant floor heating system for primary heating that utilizes two high efficiency low condensing boilers. A building automation system for greenhouses called ARGUS integrates irrigation and misting systems, secondary unit heaters, grow lights, ventilation, and shading. Each greenhouse includes a solar shade system to reduce the sun light emission. Six of the seven greenhouses have an integrated black out shade system to force plants into dormancy. Cooling pads systems have been installed when the shading and ventilation systems cannot keep the greenhouses cool. (4) 20,000 gallon underground tanks store stormwater to be used for watering reducing the use of City water. A Storage Prep building contains a lab, cold storage room, a small kitchen, loading dock and offices.
