Building The Future Together

On Saturday, June 27th, Hunzinger Construction Company hosted a very successful Construction Day for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee and Waukesha County.  Over 20 sets of “Bigs” and “Littles” matches spent the morning at Hunzinger learning about the construction industry as a possible career.  Each match had a fun hands on experience by building birdhouses with their “Bigs” and a seasoned Hunzinger Field Superintendent.

Hunzinger volunteers included Ryan O’Toole, who heads up Hunzinger’s Commercial Interiors Division and has been a Big Brother to a 10 year old boy from Milwaukee for the past 4 years.  Ryan coordinated the event with Pat Schoenike, a Hunzinger Superintendent with over 30 years of experience in the industry.  Together they recruited Superintendents Tony Mayek, Will Wright, and Casey Trucksa and Apprentice Carpenter Jake Callen.  Hunzinger Assistant Project Manager Christina Szews, Sarah Sandkuhler and Executive Vice President Kevin O’Toole were also on hand to help with the activities.

After the birdhouses were assembled and beautifully painted by the kids, our Superintendents took everyone outside to the yard where numerous pieces of construction equipment were displayed.  The Superintendents described each machine, talked about how each is used in the field and how it is used safely.  The group had the opportunity to ask questions and explore the equipment before returning inside for construction bingo, word searches and lunch provided by Hunzinger.

“Everyone did a fantastic job and it is quite refreshing to know that we are making a difference”, Kevin O’Toole said as he thanked the Hunzinger volunteers.

“It was really rewarding helping the kids.  You could just see their excitement when they were building the birdhouses.  They were bursting with pride when we were saying goodbye to them as they were carrying their painted birdhouse home to their families”, Will Wright reflected on the event.  “I am already looking forward to next year!”
